BRITISH WOMEN TAKE BRONZE ON TCHOUKBALL WORLD STAGE
Date: 4 July 2007
Five female tchoukballers from Norfolk, Suffolk and Portsmouth took bronze in the International Beach Tchoukball Championships this weekend.
Competing against 7 teams from Canada, Switzerland, France and the Republic of China, the British women won the third-forth play-off match in 3 straight sets. The competition took place in a specially-built beach stadium in the centre of the Swiss capital Geneva from Friday 29th June - Tuesday 3rd July. The final matches were broadcast live to 41 countries on Eurosport 2.
Charlotte Vanner, captain of the women's squad praised the team's performance.
Vanner said: 'This was a new squad not used to competing at the highest level on sand. 'The team worked hard despite playing in driving rain at times. 'Beating Canada in 3 sets was tough but our determination and supporters saw us through.'
Three British men's sides also competed finishing 5th, 6th and 9th.
Tchoukball is a non-contact team sport played by teams of between 5 to 9 indoors, outdoors or on the beach. Players compete by rebounding the ball across a tightly-sprung trampette whilst defending players try to catch the ball before it touches the ground.
