PORTSMOUTH AND BROADLAND TCHOUKBALLERS QUALIFY FOR EUROPEAN CUP
Date: 11 November 2007
Portsmouth and Broadland tchoukball clubs have qualified for this session's European Winners' Cup. Finishing first and second in the UK domestic club competition, held in Portsmouth this weekend (Sunday 11 November 07), both sides secured their places in 'tchoukball's champions league' in Ferrera, Italy, in February 2008.
The teams will now represent Great Britain against top sides from other European nations including Switzerland and Italy.
Portsmouth won all their matches, beating Broadland 60- 40. This is the second year running that Portsmouth Tchoukball Club has won the Andrews Shield. Last year, they won the inaugural Andrews Shield - named after the founding member of tchoukball in the UK, John Andrews, who died in 2005.
Commenting on the win, Portsmouth Tchoukball Club Chairman Andy Wolfe said:
'We put out a more experienced side this year as we wanted to retain our title. Our teams proved that teamwork as well as a strong defence and skilful attack are an essential to winning in tchoukball. We're now training hard for the European Cup which we intend to bring back to the UK.'
Broadland Tchoukball Club Chairman, John Tubby, said:
'Broadland demonstrated some excellent and skilful tchoukball, especially from our younger players competing with the adults for the first time. We are going to build on our performance for the European Cup in February.'
Commenting on the both clubs' potential, Richard Jackson, Executive Director of the Tchoukball Association of Great Britain said:
'Having won the European Championships in 2006, the British teams have great potential to win the Cup. Both sides have a number of Great Britain squad members in them so we are confident of an impressive performance.'
